Roermond Light Experience

Roermond and the province Limburg asked Painting with Light to upgrade the underpass between the city center and the neighbouring shopping outlet. Nine million people visit the Designer Outlet Roermond every year and one out of four walks into the historic city center of Roermond. Local and provincial boards wanted a top connection to inform visitors about Roermond in a fun and attractive way. A boring and dark pedestrian underpass should transform into an exciting experience.

PWL created all content and animations, as well as light design and the full technical installation. A large print, reflecting the Roermond tourist highlights, was installed against the wall of the underpass. The mascot, an animated "Roermondje", guides visitors alongside the most important buildings and squares of the inner city. The streaming water of the river Maas blending with the Roer has a prominent role on the wall, seen its importance to the Roermond skyline. With advanced projection mapping from 7 projectors and energy-efficient LED lighting, the visitor gets fully immersed in the animation. The ambient lighting is changing during day and night, with LED-lines covering the ceiling and modifying the atmosphere of the animation accordingly. At night, there is a fixed mode of the light atmosphere.

Andy Dritty, Delegate of the Province of Limburg, explains:

"This animation is really pulling visitors from the outlet center to the city center, triggering them into a visit. Roermond is one of the cities in Limburg, that is very well known, both in Germany and Belgium."

Rudolf Van Gompel, Director of the Designer Outlet Roermond:

"The connection with the city center is impressive and really reflects what it stands for - all of Roermond´s highlights are beautifully pictured in a moving and innovative way. I find the whole installation very inspiring and really believe it makes people happy!"
