Music Industry Awards 2021

The MIA's, in full Music Industry Awards, are the Flemish music awards that are awarded annually by the VRT in collaboration with Artspoint, Most MIA's are public prizes, which are chosen via an online voting procedure. A number of MIA's are chosen by professionals from the Flemish music world. The most important MIA is the one for "Hit of the year". This largest Flemish TV music show around the presentation of the MIA's is produced by Een and is broadcasted live.

Challenge

The station required a new stage design for their annual Music Industry Award show, one of the most watched music TV shows in the country. The brief required a complete environmental design incorporating lighting design, set and visuals. PWL could deliver all four disciplines with style and flair.

Result

In cooperation with the station’s Art Director Ludovic Beun and together with Deusjevoo, Painting With Light created a setting with a fresh festival vibe. There were 9 live acts and 16 awards to be presented, so a smaller main stage for the awards was flanked by two bigger stages for the live acts. The side stages were backed by the eye-catching ‘media cubes’ set design, complete with some very nice visuals. The experience for both the live audience in the studio and those in front of their TVs … was incredible.

Jeroen Opsteyn Jeroen is a busy man, who has been giving his all as a light programmer and designer at Painting with Light for the last 6 years. Every day, he tries to come up with a new show in a creative way. He really is an ambiance creator who is quick and adept at programming shows. He enjoys the satisfaction of seeing everything come together during the first show after an intense start-up, and the positive reactions from the audience. As a loyal team player, giving away house secrets is not his thing: after all, what happens on tour ... He has particularly find memories of The Bodyguard, his first ‘big’ musical project at Painting with Light. It cost him six weeks of blood, sweat, and tears, but the result was a definite hit.
Jo Segers Jo has been working at Painting with Light as a designer for three years. He usually makes a rough sketch of his initial ideas for a new concept. Pretty old school, right? He translates these sketches into a digital sketch that serves as a basis for a 3D model he uses to make digital animations for the project. He rather enjoys communicating with the client about the designs, and he also looks after installation programming on some of the projects (usually with Céline). He loves the variety of his work. Each project has its own action plan, and this is different every time. He’s got a great anecdote featuring a colleague and a folding chair, but he’s keeping it a secret. That’s right, he’s very discreet too. As far as projects go, he has good memories of the 2019 Niels Destadsbader concert in the Sportpaleis. Not just because it was the first Sportpaleis show he was closely involved in, but also because of the great atmosphere.
Katleen Selleslagh Katleen has been a video programmer and operator at Painting with Light for more than 10 years. According to colleagues, she is blessed with an extraordinarily sharp eye, and she is precise, solution-oriented, and persistent. She loves the challenge of new projects, and the energy from the audience during live shows. Among the many interesting projects, Throwback stands out in particular. Long days, it’s true, but the atmosphere at shows is amazing. The ‘old’ K3 farewell tour is still fresh in her memory. Katleen at the top!
Werner Dries Light has almost no secrets left for Werner - he has been an operating designer for 30 years. Or should it be designing operator? Whatever is on his schedule, he reckons every working day looks good. Even more so if television work is involved, as that is where he excels, according to his colleagues. Is there a show horse hiding inside him perhaps? He cites creativity and diversity as the nicest aspects of his work. He would describe himself as experienced (that’s lucky, so would we), cheerful, and professional. He loves all kinds of projects, because in his own words: “I love my job”.
Toon Raskin Toon studied multimedia and communication technology at the Erasmushogeschool in Brussels and completed a successful internship at Painting with Light. As soon as he got his diploma, he could start work as a video and media server specialist. He is often on the road for shows, to look after video productions for LED screens or projections. When he does make it to his office chair, he likes to devise and develop virtual live shows. He is always open to learning new things, and he likes to think in terms of solutions. His moment of glory so far was during his internship when he immediately went along to the ultimate city of light Paris for a rollercoaster project. The amusement park was closed, it was snowing and Toon and the PWL team worked up a sweat. Cool!
Luc Peumans As a child, Luc was already fascinated by light and technology, which inspired him to study engineering alongside his musical hobbies. His passion for light took off when he became a member of the Symbolica dance theatre. During his studies, he gained his first work experience as a light technician, designer and operator for national and international concerts and shows. This was the seed for the establishment of Painting with Light in 1999. Luc is a creative perfectionist who will never shy away from a challenge. He cherishes time with his two children Sam and Bo, and he also likes being on a golf course. He cites the “Clouseau in het Lang” concert from 2005 and the 2018 musical project ‘40-‘45 as memorable challenges, that succeeded thanks to groundbreaking and enthusiastic teamwork. Should we even mention that he is proud as punch of his team?
