James De Musical

The concept of this television programme is surprise and honour famous Flemings with a musical about their lives. In the show, James Cooke treats the guests with a throwback rollercoaster with a laugh, a tear and an impressive show.

Challenge

James Cooke hosts his guests at the beautiful NTG theatre in Ghent. In the intro he sings 'Life is a musical/ you don't know what it will be'. So many surprises for Natalia, Niels Destadsbader, Jani Kazaltzis, Willy Sommers, De Pfaffs, Philippe Geubels, Gert Verhulst and Margriet Hermans. They are the guests in their own musical in which they are flashed back to their childhood, adolescence, a first love and defining professional and personal moments. Each time, a well-known song from the year of memory is used, with adapted lyrics. Production house Dedsit produces James De Musical on behalf of SBS Belgium, the company behind channel Play4, which broadcasts the programme. They asked PWL to support them with lighting design and stage design, among other things. And of course we couldn't say no to that!

Result

The life of the central guest in James The Musical is highlighted each time through photos, testimonies, video clips and ... five musical scenes about key moments in his/her life. Cleverly adapted classics, presented with great attention to scenery and details in a dazzling show. Each broadcast is therefore a mix of often moving, intimate conversations and confrontations, and exuberant spectacle with singers and dancers where everything can be pulled out of the closet. So it was right up our PWL team's street! We not only did the lighting and stage design, but also sent our lighting and video programmers and supplied the lighting tables and media servers. The lighting material was provided by Phlippo Productions, the video material by Pixelscreen and Bart Tauwenberg (New Solid) took care of the video content. Also, a nice shout out to our creative neighbours Deusjevoo. They were responsible for the design and realisation of the decor of the talk set that fits wonderfully into the beautiful setting of the NTG Theatre. The final result met with the approval not only of director Kevin Houben but also of a host of other fans. The concept clearly struck a chord right from the start with 774,000 viewers, and with those who watched on delayed viewing added up to 1.2 million. A second season of James the musical is on it's way!
